I plan on getting Serum at some point but Im not willing to spend the money yet since Im still fairly new.

Im wondering if its possible to get really gritty, dirty dubstep basses with a free plugin or an FL Studio plugin like Sytrus, and if there are any tipstutorials for doing so.

Look up tutorials for what you already have, youd be surprised.

Expensive plugins arent essential to making sounds, understanding synthesis and sound design IS.

Share Report Save level 2 2 years ago Amen I almost always start with the SeamlessR method: Take a sine wave on operator 1, a triangle wave in operator 2 with an added harmonic on.

I wanna say the 32nd one (I just do it by visualization nowadays), then modulate one by two.

I usually drop the ratio of oscillator 2 down to 1 for added gnarliness.

After youve got that as a foundation, you can play around with adding harmonics, modulating osc 2 by 3, or warping the shape of the triangle wave on 2 for different timbres.

The UI for FM synthesisers like Sytrus is more opaque as the theory behind how it works requires a bit more learning than a standard subtractive synth like Massive.

Watch this tutorial until youve got the gist of what FM synthesis does, and then maybe these videos (with the first one in the second playlist of SeamlessR presenting at a conference being perhaps the most useful to you).

Since I learned how an FM synth works, I find Im using Massive less and less now.

The huge preset library that Massive comes with is useful, but besides that Im hardly designing any new sounds in it now because Sytrus can do everything that it can (other than premade wavetables) and so much more.

You can make some sick stuff just by filtering a pitched down square wave.

That being said serum and massive have amazing filters that most synths dont have.

The FL Studio built-in plugins are actually extremely good at what they do.

Besides that, you could literally make good growls with 3xOsc if you really wanted to.

Experiment with weird sounds and you will get good results.

The very basic general formula is this: Get a saw wave Put a lowpass filter on it Put an LFO (preferably w a sine or triangle waveform) or on the filter cutoff frequency Add a bitcrusher effect You can add some saturation, distortion or stereo width in order to beef it up if you want, but thats the gist of a vocal growl.
